Understanding Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behaviour areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. If your child has a developmental delay, it does not necessarily mean they have a developmental disability. However, a developmental delay can be an early indicator of a learning disability and most children with disabilities exhibit several developmental delays.

The causes of developmental disabilities are varied and remain unknown in a large proportion of cases. Genetic factors have long been implicated in causing developmental disabilities. These conditions are also believed to have a large environmental component, and the relative contributions of nature versus nurture have been debated for decades. Preterm birth is known to be a predictor for potential developmental disabilities later in childhood, which complicates the question of nature versus nurture, as premature birth could already have resulted from earlier and longer existing difficulties. Second, being born at such an immature gestation could immediately have damaged the main organs (lungs and brain) or, third, such damage could arise in the neonatal period, for instance from the necessary intrusive treatment.

Without early intervention during the critical window – the first 6 years of their life – children might continue to face challenges and may have trouble in catching up. This decreases their chances of entering a mainstream school. A disability can impact one of these facets of a child’s development: cognition, motor, vision, hearing, speech, and behaviour. Cognitive or intellectual disabilities can include specific learning disabilities, as well as reading disabilities, like dyslexia. One example of a behavioural deficit includes Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder. Some disabilities are only identified later in childhood, such as when a child starts school.

Virtual Autism – A New Threat To Toddlers

Virtual autism is a condition that is understood to occur when young children under the age of four are exposed to excessive screen time. Studies have shown that children with autism show impaired social communication skills and repetitive behaviours. When children spend hours a day interacting with screens, it can lead to reduced brain function and challenging behaviour. It is thought that this may be caused by the fact that many of the games and apps we use on our phones, tablets, and computers have been developed specifically for children. This has led to an increase in prevalence among children under four years old.

Over-exposure to screentime is defined by experts as more than two hours per day. More than this has been found to affect brain development, leading to cognitive abilities being affected, speech delay and certain behavioural issues, resulting in children that are not able to interact positively with their peers. The age up to three years is very crucial for any toddler to develop language and speech skills. It is through observing lip movements of those around them that babies learn to speak. Experts opine that if this is replaced by mimicking characters as seen on TV, developmental issues are sure to develop in the child. To find features in children, parents should pay attention to every activity of the child, especially when the child is playing games on the mobile phone computer or PC, watching movies. If these symptoms are ignored, then your child will grow up with this idea. Takes this direction. The baby is small. As their symptoms start to appear, you have more time. Understanding The Effects of Autism on Brain

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that has been widely studied for over 30 years. Despite its high prevalence rate, the causes of autism remain elusive. What’s more, the treatment effect of autism varies considerably from person to person and often depends on the severity of symptoms present at birth. The causes for these differences in prevalence are not fully known at this time, although it is thought that genetic factors may play a role in some people’s risk for developing autism from birth onward. The term itself derives from the Greek word “autos” meaning ‘self’, and “-poiein”, or “to make or do”. Symptoms appear before age 3 and may be accompanied by some degree of delay in development. This disorder is characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication and restrictive, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities.

No two people with autism are the same, in terms of their symptoms. For some people on the spectrum, it’s difficult to make eye contact or read other people’s facial expressions. Persons with autism experience information processing in their brains that is different from people without autism. The brain shows less coordinated activity in autism. Uncertainty exists on whether autism affects how specific brain regions function on their own. The brain’s grey matter, which controls the majority of its functions, is far more developed in children with ASD. Children with ASD have brains that are larger overall than those of typical children but underdeveloped in certain areas. This phenomenon might help explain why some kids with ASD excel at math and other subjects that require keen visual-spatial abilities and learning by role, while other kids struggle in these areas.

The human brain contains extensive structural and functional networks. Early brain imaging shows that a brain region can have different activity and roles with both brain network activities and functions. Functional connections and anatomical connections in the brain can be distinguished from one another. The physical connections that exist between the two hemispheres of the brain contain these connections.

Behavioural Therapy For ADHD Kids

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be difficult to diagnose in children and adolescents because symptoms can vary greatly from one child to another. Behavioural therapy is a treatment that addresses behaviours and emotions that cause problems with concentration, organization, time management, self-control, and cooperation. This is also one of the most widely seen neurodevelopmental problems of children while growing up. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviours (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active. One of the major treatment techniques used for controlling ADHD is behavioural therapy. Behavioral therapy is an effective treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that can improve a child’s behaviour, self-control, and self-esteem.

Behavioural Therapy an umbrella term for types of therapy that treat ADHD. This will benefit your child by limiting their destructive behaviour, strengthen their good behaviour and most importantly enable the child to express their feelings in a peaceful manner. Behavioural therapy is used to treat the following symptoms like:

The four most common treatments for ADHD under behavioural therapy are:

Ayurvedic Approach Towards Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a condition in which the nervous system loses control of some or all of the muscles and joints of the body. For example, an individual with cerebral palsy (CP) lacks control over voluntary muscle movements and can’t walk, feed themselves or even talk on their own. This means that if an individual with CP needs to use the toilet, they need to be taken care of by someone else. The person with CP needs care 24 hours a day from someone who can help feed them, bathe them, dress them and more. The word “cerebral” refers to the brain, while “palsy” means paralysis.
One of the main causes of cerebral palsy is premature birth, although most babies born prematurely don’t have cerebral palsy. The symptoms of cerebral palsy can range from mild to severe and includes muscle control movement, coordination, and balance issues.

Early signs of cerebral palsy may include developmental delays such as:

• Rolling Over
• Sitting up
• Crawling and walking later than usual

According to Ayurveda covering a special care for Cerebral Palsy is a critical aspect of holistic medicine. This disease is caused by genetic mutation and it’s not an acute disease (incurable). How Social Skills Are Affected By Autism?

Autism is a developmental disorder that can impact the way a person communicates, interacts with the world around them, and manages emotions. The treatment of social skills deficit remains one of the most challenging areas in meeting the needs of people with autism. Social skills are formed through regular interactions with people. Since children with autism have a hard time understanding and reading others, social skills often need to be taught differently.

Social skills can be limited or different in a child with autism regardless of the severity of the disorder. Generally, a higher degree of disability means a more significant impact on behaviour, communication skills, and social interactions. Autistic children can find it difficult to use social skills they’ve learned. For example, your child might be able to share pencils at home with their siblings but not at school with their classmates. Connection Between Sleep Disorder And ADHD In Kids!

Children with ADHD would often find it very difficult to sleep because the activity level of the child would be higher than of a normal child. The symptoms that the child would encompass are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity which would deprive the child from having a good sleep. For most children, the disorder continues into adulthood, though careful managing can greatly improve quality of life for children with ADHD.

Children with ADHD experience sleep problems, ranging from insomnia to secondary sleep conditions. Nightmares are also common with children who are having insomnia and if not treated properly could lead the children to continue the conditions to adulthood. Children who are rarely hyperactive during the day may experience racing thoughts and a burst of energy at night that interfere with sleeping. Some children start to hyperfocus on very less important objects and make it difficult for them to sleep which leads to a disrupted sleep wake schedule. What all parents need to know about Baby’s first smile!

Often new-born babies will smile in their sleep. Sometimes a smile in the early weeks of life is simply a sign that your little bundle is passing gas. But starting between 6 and 8 weeks of life, babies develop a “social smile” an intentional gesture of warmth meant just for you. This is an important milestone. This smile means that the baby is growing up and starting to adapt the human behaviour usually babies. This will increase as they start to understand that they can get the elder’s attention. This is one of the most important indicators that will show the advancement of the baby’s brain and will be a check whether the communication skills are in track.

In some cases, even if we try the babies wouldn’t give a grin or smile sometimes the babies take some time for developing the smile on their face. Encourage the baby by talking to them often (make sure you give her time to “respond”), making eye contact frequently, and smiling at her throughout the day. And don’t be afraid to get silly: Making funny faces or noises, imitating animal sounds and behaviours, blowing raspberries on your baby’s belly, or playing a game of peek-a-boo may push the baby’s smiley button on.

If the child is prematurely born, please do give a few extra weeks or a month. In general, the more premature the baby is the more time it takes to develop the brain. Your baby’s reflex smile will disappear by time she’s 2 months old, and her first real one will make an appearance somewhere between one-and-a-half to 3 months (or 6 and 12 weeks) of life. You can tell the difference between a reflex and real smile by the timing and duration. Generally, reflex smiles tend to be shorter and occur randomly, when the baby is sleeping or tired. Real smiles, on the other hand, occur in response to something, like seeing her mama’s face or hearing a sibling’s high-pitched voice, and they are consistent.

At first, your little guy’s happy face will be in response to a mix of vocal and visual stimulation. Therefore, he/she may light up from watching you sing a favourite lullaby or talk him through a particularly yucky diaper change. Later, when the vision improves, simply seeing the face of favourite people will be enough to make the baby crack a smile. You’ll be the recipient of most of your baby’s smiles, but they will also exchange grins with others (that is until stranger anxiety kicks in at around 6 months). As your baby gets more smiling practice and enjoyment from seeing people’s reactions they will start. By 5 months, your babe may surprise you with full-out belly laughs and squeals of excitement.
