Department of Psychology and Behavioural Management

Behaviour is a very familiar term in our daily lives but in psychology, it is the reaction of an organism to its external environment. Generally, behaviours are situation specific and people learn various behaviours through specific ways of reacting to or dealing with specific situations. When an individual's behaviour is not proper or suitable to the environment, it is considered to be a maladaptive behaviour pattern, which should be modified with appropriate treatment methods. Maladaptive behaviours are acquired through learning in thearlye same way as that of any behaviour. In children, problems due to maladaptive behaviour patterns are common, and appropriate interventions are required.

Behaviour therapy concentrates more on behaviour and less on its presumed underlying cause. Behavioural modification is one of the approaches of behaviour therapy that aims to change maladaptive behaviours into adaptive ones. Psychological principles, especially learning principles that focuses on consequences of behaviour are effective in modifying maladaptive behaviour. For example, inappropriate behaviour could be reduced by reinforcing adaptive behaviours. It is an empirically proven approach that is applicable in the treatment of a wide range of behaviour problems in both adults and children. The major behavioural issues in children, such as temper tantrums, destructive behaviours, stubbornness, disobedience with adult authorities, back answering, rule violations, annoying behaviours, etc, could be modified using behaviour therapy techniques.

Behaviour therapy involves setting specific and clearly defined treatment goals and behaviour therapist adapts different treatment goals to each problems. It helps in skill acquisition and management of challenging behaviours. Behaviour therapy will be suitable for children withs, Intellectual Disabilities, Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other Pervasive Developmental disorder (PDD, Attention& deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), Conduct Disorder, Impulse control disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and other Behavioural Disorders.
